Drugs and Alcohol Screening

A Health and Safety Executive study has shown that Alcohol causes 3-5% of all absences from work which equates to between 8 and 14 million lost work days each year. In addition the survey shows that:

  • 34.4% of people have felt the effects of alcohol at work
  • 69.5% had noticed a colleague feeling the effect of alcohol at work
  • 30.1 % believed a colleague had a drinking problem

Alcohol affects judgement and physical co-ordination and drinking even small amounts of alcohol will significantly increase the risk of an accident. Alcohol is also considered a drug, which is defined as “a substance that alters the way in which the body or mind works.”

The key to addressing alcohol and drugs misuse in the workplace is to define a policy and each client company has a moral, legal and financial responsibility to so do. An alcohol and drugs policy should be part of the workplace’s overall commitment to safety, good working relations and the promotion of good health at work.
